n business, ROI — return on investment — is the measure of success. But what if we applied that same concept to parenting? In this episode of The Business of Parenting Podcast, Jackie Mourot unpacks the idea of Parenting ROI — the long-term returns that come not in dollars or quarterly reports, but in the kind of people our children become.
From the daily inputs of time, attention, and modeling values, to the outputs of resilience, kindness, and responsibility, Jackie shows how small, consistent investments compound into lifelong character. She shares personal stories, research insights, and practical reflection questions to help parents reframe frustrations as long-term deposits and measure the right metrics: not grades or trophies, but influence and legacy.
Because at the end of the day, we don’t just grow kids. We grow people.

Have your kids ever said, “School is such a waste—why do I need to learn this?” You’re not alone. In this episode of The Business of Parenting Podcast, Jackie Mourot reframes the role of school for parents and kids alike. She explores the difference between education and schooling, shows how parents remain their children’s most important educators, and offers practical strategies to make learning engaging at home. Using the tree metaphor, Jackie helps us see school not as wasted time but as the leaves that energize growth—temporary or lasting, each contributes to the whole. If you want to raise lifelong learners and ease your child’s (and your own) frustrations with school, this episode will encourage and equip you to reframe the way you see learning.

Ever catch yourself saying, “I wish I had more time… I wish I had more energy… I wish I could focus more on my kids…”? As parents, we spend a lot of time at the wishing well, tossing in our hopes and waiting for something to change. But wishing wells are bottomless. They swallow our “I wish” and never deliver the “then.”
In this episode of The Business of Parenting Podcast, Jackie Mourot, Ed.D. introduces a powerful new metaphor — the wishing jar. Unlike the well, a jar has a bottom. It gives you a place to capture your wishes and surround them with the resources, skills, and opportunities you already have.
Jackie shares her own weeklong experiment (starting with helping her new middle schooler adjust), showing how she shifted from “I wish” to “I can” by recognizing the present possibilities already within reach.
If you’ve been stuck in wishing well mode — especially at the start of a busy school year — this episode will inspire you to pair your hopes with purposeful action and lead your family with confidence.
To hear about the entire weeklong experiment, check out The Business of Parenting Blog this Wednesday at TheBusinessofParenting.com

We tell our kids that when one door closes, another one opens — but when it’s our turn to face rejection or disappointment, living that truth isn’t so easy. In this episode of The Business of Parenting Podcast, Jackie shares a personal story of hearing “no” herself, and how it became an opportunity to practice what she preaches.
Together we’ll explore the difference between managing family logistics and leading with values, and why “no” plays such an important role in both. You’ll learn three practical ways to reframe “no” as an investment in resilience, connect it to your family values, and model how to handle rejection for your kids.
Because sometimes the most powerful leadership moments aren’t found in the “yes”es — they’re hidden in the “no”s.

In this episode of Table Talks, Jackie sits down with her 18-year-old daughter, Julianna, as she embarks on her college journey. Together, they explore what it really takes for parents to help their teens discover and grow their passions—whether that means housing rescued animals, encouraging musical talent, or simply giving kids the space to explore.
Julianna shares how her childhood fascination with animals became a lifelong passion for biology and veterinary science, and the role her parents played in encouraging her curiosity while respecting boundaries (no snakes allowed!). Jackie adds the parent perspective, highlighting the importance of observation, encouragement, and creating opportunities for exploration without pressure.
This honest and insightful conversation offers practical takeaways for parents on how to support their children’s unique interests and for teens on how to stay open, self-reflective, and true to what excites them most.

As parents, we play a critical leadership role in our children’s lives—modeling values, teaching life lessons, and doing our best to raise kind, capable future adults. But there comes a point when we have to recognize what is—and isn’t—ours to carry. In this episode, we explore the tension between owning our role as intentional leaders at home and releasing the guilt and shame that can come when our children make choices outside our control. Because parenting isn’t about perfection—it’s about doing your part, and letting go of theirs.
